Vintage Bits - Thrift Share Monday

A visit to Melbourne, FL and thrifting the local haunts this weekend.

1936 Christmas carols booklet and 1950's-ish Wonder book.
(It's all about the graphics!)

Oh yes - graphics galore in this little red "Let's Play and Sing" book.

Stitchy Bits! Palmer and Pletsch, Vogue and Aunt Martha

Old Consumer Reports magazines, circa 1960's! There were more, but I picked for graphics and content. These ones are Christmas Buying Guides (spirograph!!) and reviews on classic (now, anyway) cars.

Vermont tea pot shaped trivet

An obsolete slide storage box - future art supplies organizer, I think!

And a slightly dinged up hand-painted Santa egg. He looks like  he has a black eye, and that amused me immensely in the store!

Where's the bleep?

Something in my home is bleeping at me.

Which one is it? There are too many options. It's been a technology upgrade sort of week. Just about everything electronic has been unplugged, moved, re-setup in that domino-falling way of interconnection.

It started with a failing 7 year old printer. It printed okay, but couldn't hold the driver settings for more than a day. And I'd had enough of reinstalling the printer.every.single.day.and.sometimes.twice.a.day.

A new wireless printer was procured - which is very nice, now everyone in the home can print. Which meant a more central printer location was needed, which meant Stuff Needed To Be Rearranged. (much plugging and unplugging occurred)

Something is bleep bleep bleeping in my home, somewhere.

Is it one of the computers or cel phones? That was another series of learning this week. The young person discovered texting and calling her buddies now that the summer separation from the school social network is in full swing. New phone plan, new phones all around, and more setup of technology.

More bleep bleep bleeping from somewhere in the home.

And it worked out that this week the neighborhood cable contract upgraded everyone to digital. Meaning every TV needs a "box". Entertainment centers (uhhhhh maybe they should be called zombie centers for the way they suck all the interaction out of people and turn them into snarling monsters if someone "gets in the way") are great for corralling gear, and horrendous for making changes. 3 rooms of gear got unplugged, replugged and restarted. (And the Wii won't power up, now. No Netflix streaming. WHIMPER)

Still that bleep bleep bleep is going on.

In the past, phantom bleep bleep bleeps have emanated from the appliances. Usually a fault condition. And so puzzling to hear and find.

That's where I am this morning. Puzzled at finding the bleeps - is it an alert? A fault condition? A failing battery? An offline gizmo?

Impromptu washing

I need to get back to the feeling of relaxation above. That was day 3 of power outage after Hurricane Wilma.
We were doing bucket laundry on the patio. The immediate stress level was so low I was feeling quite happy despite the inevitable damage fixings that would be addressed down the road. We were camping in our home and it was great.

I'm going to unplug for a bit, detach from technology and get back that relaxed feeling!!

Odd Tuesdays - Stitched, the film

Doing a virtual Odd Tuesday gathering today.

Odd Tuesday's are the get-together days for my local creative friends. We BYOL (bring your own lunch), share Show-n-Tell for works in progress, and create mini-workshops for each other in varied fabric related techniques.

Today we're all scattered with other activities - summer travel, etc, - so I'm hosting the meeting online!

Lookee what arrived in the mail!! The DVD for the indie film "Stitched". Filmmakers Jenalia Moreno, Nancy Sarnoff, and Thomas Gandy follow quilt artists Caryl Bryer Fallert, Hollis Chatelain , and Randall Cook for more than a year leading up to  entering work at Houston's 2010 International Quilt show. Plus, they contrast the mindsets and reactions of the traditional vs. art quilters and capture the general quilt show "feeling of being there".

And it's a bit funny....

Next get-together is July 5th!

Sweet Stuff - Thrift Share Monday

Nice!! A sweet 50's lidded sugar bowl and a lugged soup bowl. I could SO collect sugar and creamer sets. I love their forms and practicality. What about a booth/etsy/ebay dedicated solely to sugar creamer sets? Not sure that it would be a profitable business, but it would amuse me immensely!!

(Photo above taken outside in the early morning angular sun - butter yellow linen tablecloth backdrop nicely springing back to wrinkliness with the FL humidity)

I have no real interest in collecting soup bowls. But I fell for the marks underneath. That Ballerina Mist logo - like the twirly plastic dancers in little girls' jewelry boxes.

(Photo still taken outside - a cloud came by and squelched the sun's intensity)

Yep - a sweet set alright. Universal China's Strawflower pattern circa 1956. (Or so says www.Replacements.com)

(Moved photography indoors near an east facing window - the light greyed by the window tinting.)

From the same thrift day a pair of Holly Hobbie drinking glasses, American Greetings 1969 & 1976 (ooo - the bicentennial year!). Nice heavy based ones, too. I talked about my nostalgic link to things here.

(Photographing in the office/studio now - overhead daylight bulb and sidelight OTT light. Color is zapped away from the background)

Charming Tails!! A sweet bit of nothing spotted by one of my helper-tagalongs. (I feel like a Mamma duck with ducklings in tow - this trip just 3 ducklings to watchover in errand runs.)

(Same lighting spot as above)

Then a surprise find in the kitchen things spot at Goodwill. A horde of vintage Wilton baking pans for $0.90 each.
Couldn't pass them up! All ebay bound.
That's Super Mario above - the others were Holly Hobbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Strawberry Shortcake, Freewheelin pickup, and Playboy bunny.

(Photo'd on plain white background lit by the tint-filtered window light)

World of Threads Festival artist interviews

Oh! I've just found this link from Judy Martin's blogpost recently.

Just opening the page caused me to gasp - with 20 or so images of works from fiber artists and links to their interviews.

http://www.worldofthreadsfestival.com/artist_interviews_menu.html

I can't wait to read them all!

And World of Threads Festival - how wonderful to visit that one day!

It's on my  list.

You know, the "when I hit the lottery and/or stumble across a hoarde of treasure in the backyard" list.

Hmmm - perhaps there's another way to get there!!

Button video - Thrift Share Monday

Last week I lamented my constant thrift buying without making efforts to list/declutter.

Did that stop me from buying?

Uhhhh, Nope.

(Linking up today with Selena's Thrift Share Monday)

Look at all that stuff. Pyrex. Marcrest milk glass bowl. Koala/boomerang salt and pepper shakers. Precious Moments coffee beaker. Taylor something Jamaica Bay plates, Tupperware measuring spoons, Airline plate and flatware, Salem porcelle Xmas glass mug, Haeger ash tray.

And I didn't photograph the piles of books.

Nor the sidewalk sale furniture bits to spray paint for daughters room upgrading.

Sigh...

BUT!!!  I did 2 long mornings photographing and got some listings done.

So there is headway.

At last!

Meanwhile....have you seen this video?

For those with button addictions....

Mebbee it'll rain...

Maybe it'll rain...

Yeah, that cloud looks threatening (heh heh)

The lettuce has shot up to 5 foot, gone to seed.
(When would it normally form those lovely clumps of salad leaves like we buy in the supermarket?
Mine grew on stalks 4" apart like they were afraid to touch each other.
Yay - more learning curves!)

But we could do with some rain.
(Taking photo after photo with the novelty of brown leaves)

The caladiums are happy!

I predict rain tomorrow - when I help a friend with her garage sale.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Odd Tuesdays - Inspiration

Yesterday, Sophie of Her Library Adventures shared this video from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Alexander McQueen exhibit. A great start to the day for inspiration!!

This summer I've been getting together with my creative friends on Odd Tuesday's to make, create and share techniques & ideas. I've selfishly invited them into my home all summer while kids are on school break. I welcome this adult playdate on a consistant basis. I so enjoy my creative friends. (and appreciate their willingness to trek to my home! Thanks folks!)

We're playing with Jacquard's Dye-Na-Flow paints and resists at the moment. (BTW: Dharma Trading has this great class pack of all the Dye-Na-Flow colors with resist, applicator bottles, etc)  Gina shared her last weeks efforts here.
(Belinda, Judy, and Eliza are blogless - for now - nudge, nudge!!!)

I'm continuing my color studies and working with resists in layers...

(Hmmm - perhaps I'll make a few more triangles!!!)

On a side note - I'm one of the "lucky ones" that is experiencing blogger commenting troubles - as in, I can't sign in to leave comments. Blogger has it listed as a known issue and is working on it. Sigh. Just on a week when I'd had all these lovely comments to leave.

Trying NOT to Thrift - Thrift Share Monday

My stock overfloweth...

I am reaching critical storage capacity without heading into the ugly clutter zone (perhaps I'm already there!!)

Yet, still I buy....

Lonely Dopey Salt shaker (where's the Snow White kissing his forehead?)

And buy...

Tiniest Holly Hobbie plate from the '70's

And ....sigh.... buy

Royal Albert Flower of the Month December Saucer (without the cup)
And to top it all off...

An imperfect blingy heart pin - that proved challenging to photograph this morning!!
So, I made myself feel less guilty for obtaining-much-without-listing-much when I repurposed/upcycled a country shelf unit (with imperfect spray paint) for my daughters room. Yes, thrifted for $1, and  I removed the doors with the heart cut outs. Now, it displays those 1 million little plastic things. (Okay - we need a few more shelves! Heh Heh - reason to thrift #9343)

Spray paint on a breezy day - not advised!!

2 sides to my day

2 sides to my day

Last day of school today, and for the next 2 1/2 months my days will be less obviously divided by schedules!

Making Color Studies

Starting even before my daughter headed out today I worked on color studies with the Dynaflow paints and resist on fabric.

Making Color Studies

This time I was listening to Rice's playlist from her blog, having exhausted all her podcasts yesterday.

Duck tape Nat!!

Post "quitting time" Nat and I started to construct her duct tape mannekin (duct tape over an old t-shirt - from an idea in Threads magazine years ago). Hoping this will help her make her cosplay costume bits with more success and less disappointment!!

Stuffing started

Let the stuffing begin!!!
