<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was cheered to find these images waiting here. You see, in this last month a hard drive crash and new computer have consumed my creative time. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And despite a good amount of backups - I wasn't quite perfect in that backup implementation.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, I lost some spreadsheet data and photos. But not these ones!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Continuing on from last month with that oleander motif, this time stitched on cotton over-dyed with indigo, using simple DMC stranded embroidery floss.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You know, working with anything hanging around the house!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiou-4pdmFuBZRTig09LtWwOt6EumMw0NEJqG2mTY-cN9sjQ8YLJriXe-6v3Tk-NEaJsV4yByQ925CbpRc7WhmFO3DzNPN1nr8VQz9LaW1dLvIUv59UZnlYcor9Tck3wDEqMD-OPqfy16dF/s1600/oleander+spoonflower+fabric.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiou-4pdmFuBZRTig09LtWwOt6EumMw0NEJqG2mTY-cN9sjQ8YLJriXe-6v3Tk-NEaJsV4yByQ925CbpRc7WhmFO3DzNPN1nr8VQz9LaW1dLvIUv59UZnlYcor9Tck3wDEqMD-OPqfy16dF/s1600/oleander+spoonflower+fabric.png" /></a></div>
<br />
Pondering, too, how to use the <a href="http://spoonflower.com/">Spoonflower</a> printed fabric samples with the oleander images.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And I have a tale about that little 4" embroidery hoop I use...<br />
<br />
It came from France, from the <a href="http://www.sajou.fr/en/">Sajou</a> embroidery store online. It's a lovely little hoop with nicely beveled edges and wood that doesn't split.<br />
<br />
Late one night clicking around the internet I found the <a href="http://www.sajou.fr/en/">shop</a> online - at that time all in French. And using my high school language abilities I managed to order the hoop - padding my order with some thread bobbins and postcards to reach the minimum international order.<br />
<br />
Yet my math failed me in converting from Francs to Dollars (or was it Euros?),and I reversed the conversion factor in my head.<br />
<br />
So that cute little inexpensive hoop ended up costing me...<br />
<br />
...$50!!<br />
<br />
OOops!<br />
...<br />
<br />
As always - thanks for stopping by!<br />

I have a history with things aqua. It's one of those go-to colors that always pulls my attention. It's such a happy hue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIZCSaZgGn12LmqKAJgJly3FKcj2kE-HQbS8xbpV5EuQ20h2maVGv4EFQMc8iX745YhmoiIJWuKzyU_DvuVkL00QyvjIAV38rvV-9XhlPoqkK2oUTwLJyhkrfIhkJGdVVLyS1_NKgkQ0eN/s1600/aqua+rotary+phone+blue+small.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIZCSaZgGn12LmqKAJgJly3FKcj2kE-HQbS8xbpV5EuQ20h2maVGv4EFQMc8iX745YhmoiIJWuKzyU_DvuVkL00QyvjIAV38rvV-9XhlPoqkK2oUTwLJyhkrfIhkJGdVVLyS1_NKgkQ0eN/s1600/aqua+rotary+phone+blue+small.png" title="Aqua Rotary Phone - Blissfully Imperfect blog - Jackie Kirner photo" /></a></div>
<br />
A year or so ago I found this vintage rotary telephone. Slightly overpriced, I just had to have it!<br />
<br />
It's kept me company in my office ringing away with its classic bell tone. (Yes, it works!)<br />
<br />
Although as a practical device in these digital times - not so much. (Try responding to a menu tree from a rotary phone - can't be done!)<br />
<br />
Great accessory piece, regardless of it's practicality.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
For practicality, a Samsonite suitcase fits the bill. This one was tucked into a corner of my favorite thrift shop. (The one that features a wide range of prices.)<br />
<br />
For $4.00 it came home with me. I love the subtle sparkle to the aqua blue textured exterior, and I love the shirred cover over the lid.<br />
<br />
It's a bit stained inside so I use it to tote art supplies to our <a href="http://oddtuesday.blogspot.com/">Odd Tuesday</a> creative group.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Some items come with great surprises inside.<br />
<br />
A recent jaunt to that same thrift shop on a busy day had me feeling that the offerings were picked over.<br />
<br />
Up high on a shelf I spied this aqua and white ice bucket - obviously older with the robust metal handle. Dangling from the side was a small tag with tiny writing - "ice bucket with 35 silver".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
They weren't kidding - inside an almost complete set of Towle silverplate flatware. Gorgeous! Made my day.<br />
<br />
Suburban thrift picking - always a pleasure and sometimes there's treasure!<br />

<br />
<br />
Hi folks! I'm back to blogging again, Yay!!<br />
Here's a little creative recap then I'll show you some enjoyable things I'm trying.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEwaPNZW6Q3p0DlFKzuxVn6ckl5MpQGMbYB85qvKbp6vR1TbGyOXsXxnW2TmHOuu2dRqDWt-ZhGp3rEprODn0gDr6p-8uyOAALyjeWIwAGFKYjqFzzIYLmJBRBIgGhnEx2TgNWUUIt-b_H/s1600/dog+postcards+003.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEwaPNZW6Q3p0DlFKzuxVn6ckl5MpQGMbYB85qvKbp6vR1TbGyOXsXxnW2TmHOuu2dRqDWt-ZhGp3rEprODn0gDr6p-8uyOAALyjeWIwAGFKYjqFzzIYLmJBRBIgGhnEx2TgNWUUIt-b_H/s1600/dog+postcards+003.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Last year, I created many pieces using this dog silhouette: lots of postcards with the hand carved stamp, some fabric pieces and postcards. After the loss of my dog Lily we are going to be 'cat people' only for awhile. This kinda' remained in the back of my mind all year and I unintentionally turned to the dog shape again and again.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQVV44ZCogZB269oFuBeahxlIEqtxXqGu1Mg6r3NYv_2Nh4_5nftMUu4-n86sNARDpqPLG35i0SUPcFePgNDJhf5-Y5r9Lz5mi74Yk0BUY2NNIpWunHDv41OQaFxIKP8SgyOAwPbbcLUq2/s1600/huey+planter+pair+small+size.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQVV44ZCogZB269oFuBeahxlIEqtxXqGu1Mg6r3NYv_2Nh4_5nftMUu4-n86sNARDpqPLG35i0SUPcFePgNDJhf5-Y5r9Lz5mi74Yk0BUY2NNIpWunHDv41OQaFxIKP8SgyOAwPbbcLUq2/s1600/huey+planter+pair+small+size.png" title="Kitten Huey - Blissfully Imperfect Blog - Jackie Kirner photo" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kitten Huey joins us - our Dewey is mildly amused<br />
(next year we find Louie?)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
You know, I didn't realize that I was doing it at the time, but I found that a theme is a great catalyst when wanting to try a different technique. It gets me past that 'blank paper - YIKES- what shall I do?' fear. The dog silhouette was a jumping off point to get going last year. The end result was a year of projects with a common thread, creating a cohesive mini collection.<br />

<br />
This year my creative group '<a href="http://oddtuesday.blogspot.com/">Odd Tuesday</a>' gave the gouache resist technique a go. (You can find Jane Powell's brief video tutorial <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ytnqGl1R94">here</a>.) I'd tired of my dog silhouette and after bright day outside trimming the oleanders I thought I'd play with the flowers and the associated caterpillars/moths.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
On <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/jackiekirner/oleander/">Pinterest</a> I started an oleander board for reference (and disappeared down that rabbit hole researching plants and several ways to trim my oleanders - darn you Pinterest!). Sketching from some photos I drew several blooms, buds, leaves, caterpillars and moths.<br />

Confusingly, Mancuso's World Quilt Show Florida 2013 was held in West Palm Beach in January 2014. Previous years this was a November show - typically right after <a href="http://www.quilts.com/home/shows/viewer.php?page=FallFestival">The Big One</a> in Houston.</div>

I did enjoy the Quilt as Desired exhibit - where pieced tops from the 30's and 40's were completed by top long-arm quilters of today. My favorite was that one above with Karen McTavish quilting...to me it had just the right amount of detail and big flourish quilting.<br />

Taken from the side - this portrait of Mozart has quite a saucy glance! A ribbon winner from the Florida quilts challenge.<br />
<br />
In the World Quilts section I was enamored of numerous entries - none of which I captured well in photos! These included Laura Kemshall's <a href="http://laurakemshall.blogspot.com/2013/06/gold.html">'Don't Go'</a>, Annabel Rainbow's '<a href="http://annabelrainbow.co.uk/2013/04/26/life-1-measures-of-time-3/">Life-1, Measures of Time'</a> which I'd seen on blogs as they developed and delighted examining them in reality.<br />
<br />
In general, I'm experiencing a bit of fatigue viewing certain styles of quilts. I'm going off heavy machine quilting, instead preferring quilts with more dynamic texture. I'm looking for variety, whether through hand and machine stitch combinations, or those with variable stitch density. Regardless, I appreciate the work that all these quilts need to complete!<br />
<br />
And I leave you with this simple gem: A Christmas in Kindergarten - quilt created from kid's art:<br />

Hello there! It's been while, hasn't it?<br />
<br />
Yes, I hit a blogging wall after an exhausting long driving vacation this summer. Then it was all a whirlwind of back to school and start of high school for our daughter.<br />
<br />
Followed by a fallow time with no.creative.urges whatsoever. (oh yes, and the sewing machine was in disrepair)<br />
<br />
Slowly I've returned to WANT to create again. (and thanks, Mom, for the gift of another machine!)<br />
<br />
Last week I stitched the final two letters on the <a href="http://www.dragondreams.ca/Sample_Charts.html">Dragon Dreams</a> cross stitch above - and today seamed it into a tea cozy. Those are sunprinted fabrics created recently with friends.<br />
<br />
I'm taking baby steps back into making...don't want to overwhelm myself with too much too soon!<br />
<br />
So...what have you been up to?<br />
<br />
As always, thanks for stopping by!<br />

<br />
Last month was our local Big Garage Sale held at the <a href="http://southfloridafair.org/">South Florida Fairgrounds</a>. Once again my daughter and I were up early to forage through the bargain priced goodies.<br />
<br />
We're very picky nowadays what we buy - preferring to window shop rather than over-buy. (Something to do with a bursting at the seams <a href="http://stores.ebay.com/Stitchy-Bits-and-more">ebay</a>/<a href="https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/VintageBitsToo">etsy</a> stockroom and plenty of things to list already sitting on shelves!)<br />
<br />

<br />
This morning I arrive in my home studio/office to find our cat Dewey perched nearby. (He's sitting on top of my <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/a-finish-in-day-is-good-thing.html">covered binder</a> - guess it needs a little cat fiber embellishments!)<br />
<br />
He was reminding me of one of our thrift finds that I'd just started to process...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyOjNhXwFtCJ8GY9IyzpCVY-Ssufwu1U7x-3mw-USNvPqZ0xopfBb4CbE_TR1yL87_7NEPmeO1Dc7Ba6LJZQh0NtGt6JFE6D6t6TbuNUFM1q81iQJFAwi_EukSvuI5S7hmH48_NgBhT34D/s1600/cat+textile+rescue.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyOjNhXwFtCJ8GY9IyzpCVY-Ssufwu1U7x-3mw-USNvPqZ0xopfBb4CbE_TR1yL87_7NEPmeO1Dc7Ba6LJZQh0NtGt6JFE6D6t6TbuNUFM1q81iQJFAwi_EukSvuI5S7hmH48_NgBhT34D/s1600/cat+textile+rescue.png" /></a></div>
<br />
...yes, another textile rescue waiting in the wings. This time a stamped cat embroidery that was in a very grungy frame.<br />
<br />
I've since removed it from the frame and given it (and the cardinals picture) a gentle sudsy wash to rid them of years of dust and dirt. Thankfully they came out great - and none of the fiber colors bled into the background linen.<br />
<br />
Next up for them? A couple of<a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/shes-done-giraffe-pillow-project-in-two.html"> big pillows</a>!<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAmvAb90UvpsRGrsAiZVkBjNwpcph2d9SxMeKIL2vPATM3GiOKgiafs9teTfcOZCLkQlGB6cgJF1mxpCGl7IAfWEe-__afzOdFGpF1hdq5-NCXdpxJyEIkL6KAjDVzxAtyRWSA7xL90ryM/s1600/glamping+quilt+rick+rack+almost+done.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAmvAb90UvpsRGrsAiZVkBjNwpcph2d9SxMeKIL2vPATM3GiOKgiafs9teTfcOZCLkQlGB6cgJF1mxpCGl7IAfWEe-__afzOdFGpF1hdq5-NCXdpxJyEIkL6KAjDVzxAtyRWSA7xL90ryM/s1600/glamping+quilt+rick+rack+almost+done.png" /></a></div>
<br />
Over this week I've slowly (do I work any other way?!) and carefully worked my way around the center triangles of my table topper, hand stitching down my vintage red rick rack.<br />
<br />
It's funny how your mind wanders as you're stitching. I'm thinking ahead to how I want to quilt the center, borders, dresdens etc.<br />
<br />
I've dallied with adding more dresden fans to the borders or even at the edges (turned outwards so the points become the corners!)<br />
<br />
I've thought about adding more rick rack, maybe in larger sizes towards the outside edges.<br />
<br />
And then all the day dreaming comes to a screeching halt when I discover this ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3BL43rSdqRCdPK-3wi2Y5rWMKLMPi9xHn-VwnukEEF9aA2Q1Bw3kPGzqYLChTwp4xsfUix3Ugo6-HhA-7IzguDiboCaF4n505t1WZKa9_KMuXK7QVMN6_NdWYRH2PHx6uKqPwtapHK_hyphenhyphen/s1600/glamping+quilt+rick+rack+splice.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3BL43rSdqRCdPK-3wi2Y5rWMKLMPi9xHn-VwnukEEF9aA2Q1Bw3kPGzqYLChTwp4xsfUix3Ugo6-HhA-7IzguDiboCaF4n505t1WZKa9_KMuXK7QVMN6_NdWYRH2PHx6uKqPwtapHK_hyphenhyphen/s1600/glamping+quilt+rick+rack+splice.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
UGH! my rick rack too short by about 1".<br />
<br />
I run away from the project - avoiding - debating - should I rip off everything and get more rick rack?<br />
<br />
Or...attempt to splice it as invisibly as possible?<br />
<br />
Splice it is my first choice - and I think I can hide the joins against the similarly colored dots along this edge (see photo).<br />
<br />
Now - what do you think - fray check the edges and butt splice them? Or turn them under ever so slightly? What will give me the most inconspicuous join AND actually be possible for me to pull off?<br />
<br />
Any and all suggestions welcomed. (well - polite ones anyway!!)<br />
<br />

<br />
Wow - these <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/scrappy-trips-around-world.html">Scrappy Trip</a> quilt blocks go together quickly! I've already replaced my <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/07/newbie-quilter-learning-curve-strikes.html">oversized blocks</a> with better sized blocks over this weekend.<br />
<br />
In between the slower hand stitching on the <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/07/glamping-quilt-sewing-rick-rack.html">glamping quilt</a> I pop over to the sewing machine to churn out another Scrappy Trip block.<br />
<br />
Playing with the block placement has become a post-finish ritual as I turn and move each one to see the patterns emerge. (And the brain kicks in - should this become a quilt top? A window panel? lap quilt? when my original intention is a quilt back!)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT50LwRaXV1y1OQ00b4kHqom_voh6kcirKBIqSnythYPVgDM0WbF_oTUl6Oc-mdpfnu1O3ZuLfkUe7udowQro431ddSz1IxibP_NYrrPpa0vonGkY33HCJzOw7_Q3lckMfqL4kmvWts-qd/s1600/studio+fabric+bin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT50LwRaXV1y1OQ00b4kHqom_voh6kcirKBIqSnythYPVgDM0WbF_oTUl6Oc-mdpfnu1O3ZuLfkUe7udowQro431ddSz1IxibP_NYrrPpa0vonGkY33HCJzOw7_Q3lckMfqL4kmvWts-qd/s1600/studio+fabric+bin.jpg" title="Overfilled fabric bin" /></a></div>
<br />
Working with so many fabrics has stressed my rudimentary fabric organization bin (above!).<br />
<br />
An intervention was in order - and I admit to inspiration from <a href="http://fibraartysta.blogspot.com/">Lynn Krawcyzk's</a> recent studio/warehouse reinvention/declutter.<br />
<br />
(You can read her blog series on the professional organization process <a href="http://fibraartysta.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-great-studio-purge-of-2013-aftermath.html">here</a>.)<br />

<br />
<br />
After two trips to Target and an evening streaming Midsomer Murders on Netflix while playing with fabric...<br />
<br />
Ta-dah! A new drawer tower with sorted and organized fabrics - far, far better than a laundry hamper and an undersized bin.<br />

<br />
I'm bouncing around from project to project this week - and making tiny strides on each.<br />
<br />
(Do you need to have more than one thing on the go, or are you a stick with it until you're done type?)<br />
<br />
Anxious to move forward on the <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/insomnia-works-aka-glamping-quilt.html">Glamping table topper quilt</a>, I tackled getting the rick rack in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyhexd7xVbfARhi7-0KqCRbw32PhAg2yMCRmxdUA3yJQSocNAXz0fyUtuoO6UldNMEjCHCOMnjjbC3_JLhHviwGiHBwMEYTJ2-cscjsK8NW8Y4lk4N7T0tywMX-USmhW0gPUehs8-pH1UV/s550/glamping+quilt4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyhexd7xVbfARhi7-0KqCRbw32PhAg2yMCRmxdUA3yJQSocNAXz0fyUtuoO6UldNMEjCHCOMnjjbC3_JLhHviwGiHBwMEYTJ2-cscjsK8NW8Y4lk4N7T0tywMX-USmhW0gPUehs8-pH1UV/s1600/glamping+quilt4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It's tiny stuff - scarcely 3/8" peak to peak. I'd tested out sewing by machine and abandoned that idea immediately. Holding it in place well would need basting - and if I was going to baste I may as well sew the whole thing by hand!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9YAiM5SoN6DmWxDuvSQ9QJF0AsLtyeE2dQo3ilLecO-imdXHgiGwNlv4F4HcWXjNsTlNtsUVPRVRU8qUcT_jjxlXlsmxXl7cio0NbAG0-oMn0DbWVls6nXFPmCgTourXJ98V2mgpq2hCV/s550/glamping+quilt+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9YAiM5SoN6DmWxDuvSQ9QJF0AsLtyeE2dQo3ilLecO-imdXHgiGwNlv4F4HcWXjNsTlNtsUVPRVRU8qUcT_jjxlXlsmxXl7cio0NbAG0-oMn0DbWVls6nXFPmCgTourXJ98V2mgpq2hCV/s1600/glamping+quilt+2.png" /></a></div>
<br />
So I got started - dedicating the work table to the topper and popping in and out throughout the day to sit and stitch a bit more down.<br />

<br />
I'm just about halfway around already - not as time consuming as I'd thought - about the same amount of effort as stitching a binding.<br />
<br />
Sheesh - I'm always over thinking things - to think I stalled on this portion to evade the hand stitching and it turns out to be far less effort than I'd thought!!<br />
<br />
(now to tackle the machine maintenance - got any tips on cleaning out the upper thread path? Mine seems too 'friction-y')<br />

<br />
Happy 4th of July, everyone!<br />
<br />
Indulge me in a little trip down memory lane - I've been scanning old photos before they fade away. For some reason the old black and white pictures survive just fine - it's the color photos that seem unstable. (But perhaps more from storage techniques and paper stock than anything else.)<br />
<br />
Way, way back in 1976, the bicentennial year here in the USA, we Brit Folks seemed a little out of place amidst all the 200 year hoopla.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
<br />
And since there's comfort in numbers - our little family traveled from just outside Detroit, Michigan with our camping gear in the trunk - across the USA to rendezvous in California with cousins visiting from England.<br />
<br />
It was quite the journey. We covered many states by choosing a southern route out and a northern route back.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cousins and a pickup - Disneyland!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span id="goog_535154109"></span><span id="goog_535154110"></span><br />
And the best part was hanging out for a week or so with cousins - bouncing around in the back of a pickup - visiting Disneyland, Hearst Castle and camping in Bodega Bay (of Hitchcock's The Birds fame).<br />
<br />
And everywhere we went one or two of us were sporting our little buttons:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWS3lbYJuZVBLMpaTxx1lpXMGrr0axTMPiam94OuADJYb58yb59f4JFaG1QQK6bNLzMo8bXDJ9wZtOk2CYVC1UBRoA1Yr4tilTRQuoR9qtVdO8JQHV4cOsi53HF-_afqyu0acZV8tlKPbK/s96/British+are+coming+ok.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWS3lbYJuZVBLMpaTxx1lpXMGrr0axTMPiam94OuADJYb58yb59f4JFaG1QQK6bNLzMo8bXDJ9wZtOk2CYVC1UBRoA1Yr4tilTRQuoR9qtVdO8JQHV4cOsi53HF-_afqyu0acZV8tlKPbK/s200/British+are+coming+ok.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Which were met with little chuckles or quizzical looks. Heh Heh. I must admit - I'd give them a quizzical look now!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizlhT5hgzPoGMDH_M9L2i1MxVTVI3Q9L_0P6vH88RZ7zkOMsdlCJiyZ4ICKL_YBdlv7_GwVSkfoiqRNMTtA3lQh2JYP2YpSpn5TW8PQamKSY6xwUZ5MwTAfVieYmx63cW-za0cjz1CUQ2g/s550/usa+england+heart+008.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizlhT5hgzPoGMDH_M9L2i1MxVTVI3Q9L_0P6vH88RZ7zkOMsdlCJiyZ4ICKL_YBdlv7_GwVSkfoiqRNMTtA3lQh2JYP2YpSpn5TW8PQamKSY6xwUZ5MwTAfVieYmx63cW-za0cjz1CUQ2g/s320/usa+england+heart+008.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Still - it was a great trip. And from a visiting all 50 states standpoint - it knocked a huge amount off the list. In fact - I've only 10 states left to go to have stepped in them all! I'm pondering commemorating all the states I've visited by making a <a href="http://seekatesew.com/scrap-map-tutorial/">Scrappy Map wallhanging</a> similar to this one...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://seekatesew.com/scrap-map-tutorial/">http://seekatesew.com/scrap-map-tutorial/</a><img src="http://quilting.craftgossip.com/files/2011/05/scrap-map.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Kinda' fun, right? I'm pretty sure coming up with 50 different fabric scraps is not going to be a problem.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Scrappy leftover blocks</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Good morning! It's just after 8 a.m. and I've been in the studio for an hour now.<br />
<br />
I'm stopping for a light breakfast and a pondering...<br />
<br />
You see, I never used to understand when quilters would talk about leftover blocks from their projects.<br />
Why would anyone make blocks they weren't going to use?<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF1mnTrfGpps9BlwSy4JJQQAuBa2h86o2K3MwoTcVD77-QZs92_orDqimiuq0nF8qjddYSXZKUyjUVlY8uTWNKMdGSyFN6PxmFNevkIUi2NAiJiXtAaIdN0Ykj86_SUcd50mjlgutKRcat/s550/breakfast+001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF1mnTrfGpps9BlwSy4JJQQAuBa2h86o2K3MwoTcVD77-QZs92_orDqimiuq0nF8qjddYSXZKUyjUVlY8uTWNKMdGSyFN6PxmFNevkIUi2NAiJiXtAaIdN0Ykj86_SUcd50mjlgutKRcat/s1600/breakfast+001.png" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Coffee, banana, carrot cake muffin</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Now I can understand sample blocks - where you test out a design or colorway - but multiples of the same block? Couldn't figure out why you'd have leftovers.<br />
<br />
And you know where this is going, don't you!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkBAt4Bl_jnMUafDiQJgiAOZTBcvCyU-g9ZUMzpCAsB1NdZ7odn4NnHCIvgluX0xEQ-62GgmPO5Q3UVLDpTyDE5-QamDlMm8LwgiwPRuSBzDTmTJ8D4AKrB_25txl8-Dyvbe5NJ1-GHKeX/s550/mismatched+block+size.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkBAt4Bl_jnMUafDiQJgiAOZTBcvCyU-g9ZUMzpCAsB1NdZ7odn4NnHCIvgluX0xEQ-62GgmPO5Q3UVLDpTyDE5-QamDlMm8LwgiwPRuSBzDTmTJ8D4AKrB_25txl8-Dyvbe5NJ1-GHKeX/s1600/mismatched+block+size.png" /></a></div>
<br />
On the right - my block made this morning, on the left - my previously made blocks in Bonnie Hunters <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/scrappy-trips-around-world.html">Scrappy Trip </a>quilt method.<br />
<br />
What could be the problem? They're different sizes! A scant 1/4" all the way around smaller is my block from this morning.<br />
<br />
Troubleshooting mode begins:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3gsA9bnVc-3hsLCX0Va1lfa0Gh1nENaz0GTBHi_Wi3hb1QdXtKlR1tYkwsMqUnU3kUzD182SPffmKI9d2O_bxyuUZY1vweLAuDcHqVk6uOOWyQLoGNcnwDIQRdlspmDznZrPM9FPld0tZ/s550/seam+size+difference.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3gsA9bnVc-3hsLCX0Va1lfa0Gh1nENaz0GTBHi_Wi3hb1QdXtKlR1tYkwsMqUnU3kUzD182SPffmKI9d2O_bxyuUZY1vweLAuDcHqVk6uOOWyQLoGNcnwDIQRdlspmDznZrPM9FPld0tZ/s1600/seam+size+difference.png" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">unequal seam allowances</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Hmmm - look at those seam allowances - not matching at all - too small on the left, just right on the right.<br />
<br />
On the left I used my trusty blue painters tape seam guide, on the right I sewed using a 1/4" machine foot.<br />
<br />
Looks like I'd been sewing a too scant 1/4" all along! Sheesh. So my 5 blocks are all oversized.<br />
<br />
And now, I have leftover blocks. I must be a real quilter now!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQJA2CHqq-tL-KLvQ6gLj6HRI0x4eyxaRtsz4nypITbZGwPCGIXoVK_BOX11Ab7mSwjXENvg3qEQ82lYZkRaFaDYSemhuxPslj6NWdOltl-jHxwRn02UYLgWAsnb7XbqfzMwzGrcje-lt9/s550/quarter+inch+foot.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQJA2CHqq-tL-KLvQ6gLj6HRI0x4eyxaRtsz4nypITbZGwPCGIXoVK_BOX11Ab7mSwjXENvg3qEQ82lYZkRaFaDYSemhuxPslj6NWdOltl-jHxwRn02UYLgWAsnb7XbqfzMwzGrcje-lt9/s1600/quarter+inch+foot.png" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">1/4" machine foot</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Never fear - I will reuse those leftover blocks in some new creation.<br />
(But what's knocking around in my head is another <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/a-finish-in-day-is-good-thing.html">binder cover</a>!)<br />
<br />
Right - have a good day everyone - I'm off to reset my <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html">project ticker</a>...<br />

<br />
<br />
This year I've had a spate of productivity - and am so happy about that! I claim it's due to getting much more decluttered and organized in my house and studio that's really been the biggest boost to getting things done.<br />
<br />
(Oh, I had help in getting organized - I used <a href="https://brocantehome.refersion.com/c/582/301">Brocante Home's Trash It or Treasure It</a> program over 6 months to methodically work my way through the house! Yes, that's an affiliate link to <a href="https://brocantehome.refersion.com/c/582/302">Alison May's Vintage Homekeeper shop</a> - I will get a little compensation should you purchase through my link.)<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
But productivity doesn't mean finishes - and there's a reason for that. Usually it's fear, a bit of procrastination, and perfectionism creeping in!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC7ztUXIYdbwhNocUK3cdyE9B1qnEUdlhqYmtns28g18hgnufZKo3ZUKnceO1Ok9XbK4-xXvTDuvTq0s7rAv8yyfj0zFHZ3vJgli6mw7Cu802CfBAazxNT9mrKeL9o9tueVU2VNKI2mcNl/s550/2012+first+half+finishes+small.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC7ztUXIYdbwhNocUK3cdyE9B1qnEUdlhqYmtns28g18hgnufZKo3ZUKnceO1Ok9XbK4-xXvTDuvTq0s7rAv8yyfj0zFHZ3vJgli6mw7Cu802CfBAazxNT9mrKeL9o9tueVU2VNKI2mcNl/s1600/2012+first+half+finishes+small.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
What have I absolutely finished? The <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/shes-done-giraffe-pillow-project-in-two.html">giraffe pillow</a>, <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/06/sunprinted-ereader-pouch.html">2 ereader pouches</a>, <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/a-finish-in-day-is-good-thing.html">a binder cover</a>, a few <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/06/practice-makesimprovement.html">card folios</a> and some<a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/sew-mama-sew-giveaway-day-stitched-dog.html"> dog postcards</a>. All small projects. (oh, and some <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/04/more-drawstring-bags-plus-organizing.html">drawstring pouches</a>, not pictured)<br />
<br />
What am I stalled on?<br />

<br />
I didn't intend to make a straight bottomed ereader pouch yesterday.<br />
<br />
But, you know how things evolve when you're making up the design as you go. What started as a tapered standup pouch (<a href="http://blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2012/05/and-done-sunprinted-bag-2.html">as I've done before</a>) morphed itself into a padded folio just right for an ereader.<br />
<br />
Was it because I made a mistake? Nah! I'm perfect ;-) It all came about as I played with zipper installation and didn't feel like boxing off the bottom.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNZss4MTAVTSJrVkf6RGh-XeNmyxQgYKQtuOYvvbrhawQ0H4yppaKpmh8RZOIVSD63-OXKpmkwCLOl6QfiR94d8XVcE0ycMBWr0y8_X3s5xvqyL2iSV-59ZJ4fs8YNXey-Dh74fVIjxLfz/s550/sunprint+padded+ereader+pouch+with+pocket.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNZss4MTAVTSJrVkf6RGh-XeNmyxQgYKQtuOYvvbrhawQ0H4yppaKpmh8RZOIVSD63-OXKpmkwCLOl6QfiR94d8XVcE0ycMBWr0y8_X3s5xvqyL2iSV-59ZJ4fs8YNXey-Dh74fVIjxLfz/s1600/sunprint+padded+ereader+pouch+with+pocket.png" /></a></div>
<br />
Inside I've added a little pocket - I find them so useful to organize these larger/more robust pouches. The sides are quilt padded to add some structure and protection to the contents.<br />
<br />
The fabric trimmings were big enough for a matchy-matchy loop strap!<br />
<br />
One more pouch is on the worktable - will it become another ereader pouch or a tapered one? I'll know later today.<br />
<br />

<br />
Meanwhile, I'm prepping sunprint fabric for future projects. The blues, birds, and plants one turned out lovely. As its coordinate I've got lime greens with letters drying outside right now. Stay tuned to see how it turned out!<br />

<br />
Good morning, WOYWW'ers (or afternoon or evening as your time zone requires)!<br />
<br />
Yes - that's my real worktable up top - not staged - it's in thinking mode. The gelli prints are drying, made yesterday with my<a href="http://oddtuesday.blogspot.com/2013/06/gelli-ing-in-studio.html"> Odd Tuesday</a> creative group. We're trading background papers with Karen's group at <a href="http://mailmesomeart.blogspot.com/2013/06/painted-paper-swap-due-july-8th.html">mailmesomeart.blogspot.com</a>. (I've already popped mine in the mail - those above are my keepers!)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://claynfiber.blogspot.com/">Gina</a> treated us to clay play on a recent get-together - here are the fired clay pieces I'll be working with over the summer.<br />
<br />
And some little journal booklets under construction - on a whim when I saw<a href="http://justlilla.blogspot.com/2013/06/want-to-make-3-booklets-at-once.html"> this nudge at Just Lilla</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Over on the sewing table I'm getting ready to make some <a href="http://blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2012/05/and-done-sunprinted-bag-2.html">sun print fabric zipper bags</a>. And later on some more sunprint fabric - this time with flying bird designs.<br />

And I'm calling this zone my Wall of Procrastination!! Nothing new may be started until these quilts and pillows are done.<br />

We're Walt Disney World veterans - and summer is NOT the easiest time to visit. (Crowded, hot, and rainy)<br />
<br />

<br />
Disney World has been a frequent destination for us since our first visit back in 1973. (here's my sister with our coveted WDW game we received for Xmas that year - something <a href="http://blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2011/05/childhood-buyback-thrift-share-monday.html">I repurchased years later</a> in my early days on eBay.)<br />
<br />
But we have a different itinerary in mind this time than endless standing in line waiting for rides...<br />

Take a peek at this lot of lovelies I've gathered from the thrift shops in the last week. Most with a European flair from the Nordic style clogs and Swedish Dala Horse mug and the Danish duvet cover with the most delightful characters. In the background is a tiny baby sleeping bag/quilted play mat with Winnie the Pooh and friends.<br />

I just couldn't resist!<br />

Tucked in behind the clogs is a Georges Briard peacock cheese and cracker board - it's in great condition after a bit of TLC to the wood courtesy Mr. Mineral Oil!<br />

<br />
I can't take any credit for designing this wall hanging.<br />
<br />
I've adapted it from Tyler Dumas' artwork used in Disney Parks merchandise this spring.<br />
<br />
He was inspired by Disney Legend Mary Blair and said to <a href="http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2013/04/spotlight-on-2013-posters-for-april-may-and-june-from-disney-design-group/">Disney Parks blog Steven Miller</a>:<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: #eef7fc; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 14.390625px;">“The poster was inspired by [Mary Blair's] beautiful use of color and geometric shapes,” explained Tyler. “I thought it would be interesting if the castle was constructed out of children’s wood building blocks. Some blocks develop a worn feel after years of play, so you have the bright colors with the texture of the wood coming through.</span></blockquote>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6awazgVqjT6MGiagsI3JNofH_PvrwUTtnUDY9_iHX_AMXxIFDQvyhfVSsncqCQd4SHtu1vTgjBIAl_cM62JuCmHQHJxCl6SEQJo1p50VU65BW1qR3ZT1hRaMsmjOdvgpwdSblWIoj5ixs/s1600/disney+mary+blair+style+castle+wall+hanging+003.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6awazgVqjT6MGiagsI3JNofH_PvrwUTtnUDY9_iHX_AMXxIFDQvyhfVSsncqCQd4SHtu1vTgjBIAl_cM62JuCmHQHJxCl6SEQJo1p50VU65BW1qR3ZT1hRaMsmjOdvgpwdSblWIoj5ixs/s640/disney+mary+blair+style+castle+wall+hanging+003.png" width="412" /></a></div>
<br />
I've always loved Mary Blair's style and Tyler's poster screamed QUILT! to me - and even more precisely Modern style quilt wall hanging.<br />
<br />
This weekend I completed the basic piecing - using the fused to interfacing technique similar to the one found <a href="http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2009/10/elizabeths-fabric-focus-quick-piece-tiny-squares/">here</a>. The individual blocks were simple squares or half-square triangle assemblies. The turrets I paper pieced (first time with that technique!)<br />
<br />
Now I have some fiddly bits to do, applique-ing the turret flags, clock circle, and entrance doorway.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6rQiDA57TmSlp7ZIhGfT_p0dDSCcS1UPBUFM2GL8jfhP4LoQBQZ9xEbBOldwBmMa-XODTbMrfBXd1bvqx9MwMp9Y-b7Xsvuz5EZV9fvAD1fUXc9KkcqegxvyQi_RpAWny7G1J08aM2_ul/s1600/disney+mary+blair+style+castle+wall+hanging+007.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6rQiDA57TmSlp7ZIhGfT_p0dDSCcS1UPBUFM2GL8jfhP4LoQBQZ9xEbBOldwBmMa-XODTbMrfBXd1bvqx9MwMp9Y-b7Xsvuz5EZV9fvAD1fUXc9KkcqegxvyQi_RpAWny7G1J08aM2_ul/s640/disney+mary+blair+style+castle+wall+hanging+007.png" width="368" /></a></div>
<br />
Then comes a bit of decision making...<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>do I add the text or not (and how?)</li>
<li>do I add the year or not (I'd stitch this freehand)</li>
<li>what quilting should I do (I'm leaning to vertical lines only)</li>
</ul>
<div>
Regardless, I'm pleased to progress so quickly on this and LOVE my fabric choices with a bit of texture to them.</div>

<br />
3 a.m.<br />
<br />
I was up too early one day this week, unable to get back to sleep for fear of missing the alarm. (I can turn it off in my sleep!)<br />
<br />
Last day of school for our daughter and she had an end of year trip to Universal Studios again. Very early dropoff at the school for the coaches, I was sure I'd cause her to miss the bus! (we didn't )<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvvB9EH_9Edgw_-7AEr76raIUq9OQUm_ZJHpR7nCv1lgqBAXpHEaSaQmIHq9GdoGlyKLM9zMytpH4XVOtmlr7I5rOo1unoHG4nVucSFKXQTv-Di2aHf4mzZliiUzkB4YxunBO2-bK1D9Gs/s1600/color+grid+pillow+top+005.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvvB9EH_9Edgw_-7AEr76raIUq9OQUm_ZJHpR7nCv1lgqBAXpHEaSaQmIHq9GdoGlyKLM9zMytpH4XVOtmlr7I5rOo1unoHG4nVucSFKXQTv-Di2aHf4mzZliiUzkB4YxunBO2-bK1D9Gs/s1600/color+grid+pillow+top+005.png" /></a></div>
<br />
With hubby already at work I turned to the studio to occupy my wired mind.<br />
<br />
Steady rows of stitching - back and forth - completing the design I'd started a week or so ago - stripes of stitching on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jckirner/sets/72157624728090012/">Dye-na-flow colored grid</a>, the repetition was comforting to do.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifSwNrXvwMouu839X45eaBVU-ydgPz4iSpEaSdBJ7LNlsr-zBXv8s09Gfi-IXbkkV0EiuhR0srn4RBJ1cMjtUQChAphXUA0EDtpPt3nu_S0fLLrGxWH4pL6q5hMSImnVikOthR4cInaA5_/s1600/color+grid+pillow+top+002.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifSwNrXvwMouu839X45eaBVU-ydgPz4iSpEaSdBJ7LNlsr-zBXv8s09Gfi-IXbkkV0EiuhR0srn4RBJ1cMjtUQChAphXUA0EDtpPt3nu_S0fLLrGxWH4pL6q5hMSImnVikOthR4cInaA5_/s1600/color+grid+pillow+top+002.png" /></a></div>
<br />
Then a quick border and fluffy batting (pulling from the dregs of the batting box - I need to go shopping!).<br />
<br />
Concentric rows of stitching around the grid and then on to the bright white borders.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7m3YKvoy02S07cEOHWaZgG2W-9jBI_OoZPus9kOA48aysrtAsWsAYv9JrqDxVroWe76jyOso005AorTnj90BL-GgDMGk3dduVuLlnvoJHqnMi300PlTqkQp1Z9zNGN2L8O4NZd5BRszGZ/s1600/color+grid+pillow+top+006.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7m3YKvoy02S07cEOHWaZgG2W-9jBI_OoZPus9kOA48aysrtAsWsAYv9JrqDxVroWe76jyOso005AorTnj90BL-GgDMGk3dduVuLlnvoJHqnMi300PlTqkQp1Z9zNGN2L8O4NZd5BRszGZ/s1600/color+grid+pillow+top+006.png" /></a></div>
<br />
Another pillow top!<br />
<br />
I can see making the back with lines of stitching and a button close like that of the <a href="http://blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/shes-done-giraffe-pillow-project-in-two.html">giraffe pillow</a> last month.<br />
<br />
Needs colorful buttons, too. I don't have any.<br />
<br />
Yup - I really need a shopping trip!<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy Wednesday, everyone. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's what's in my workroom/studio today...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Above: I've detached the <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/bakeware-and-more-thrift-share.html">cardinal picture</a> from the rustic frame and given it a partial clean. Now I'm contemplating whether to make a large pillow similar to the <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/shes-done-giraffe-pillow-project-in-two.html">giraffe needlepoint</a> made last week</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
or</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
break it up into several smaller pillows - one bird each.<br />
(should I ...shouldn't I...should I...shouldn't I....)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First, I have to decide whether I can get away with that plaid Pendelton wool blanket as my backing (it has a few holes on one side so I'm comfortable cutting it up).<br />
It's more a colorway decision (mismatched reds) than a yikes-I'm-cutting-a-Pendelton decision!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSj1Zlq9AhSewg-JWOlUieB2QxAzfXar5Ledb1AWoNW1KmZKzaP_DEobu19EgvrsiMyk1-pwh6xh0sqI17RHcxBmLoyl2kFZ628Teni-eS3bUNa53YCf3cjhD_XePA1qg-8RAW-sHUODko/s1600/worktable+wednesday+002.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSj1Zlq9AhSewg-JWOlUieB2QxAzfXar5Ledb1AWoNW1KmZKzaP_DEobu19EgvrsiMyk1-pwh6xh0sqI17RHcxBmLoyl2kFZ628Teni-eS3bUNa53YCf3cjhD_XePA1qg-8RAW-sHUODko/s1600/worktable+wednesday+002.png" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Over on the table are my ponderings for the '5 things postcard challenge' that our creative group 'Odd Tuesday' started recently.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Go <a href="http://oddtuesday.blogspot.com/2013/05/5-things-postcard-challenge.html">here</a> to checkout what each of us came up with from previous kits.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
These are the two kits from <a href="http://claynfiber.blogspot.com/">Gina</a>'s offerings to make into two postcards.<br />
<br />
We have very loose 'rules' - basically need to use 5 of the items in the pack in your composition. That's it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvZgFgkA4dXkrbKK1R86Cvs9bkJTuY1aJB3dUGnt12lRDfboAN2_ih6IfWHMEdPRPgnitTAEcIccCCvy5NYOyUEfhBCeQsjQa-xHLT76ljtWP9WiAR8FJf9WnCIzBq6cRIiCug1Y5epKEG/s1600/014.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvZgFgkA4dXkrbKK1R86Cvs9bkJTuY1aJB3dUGnt12lRDfboAN2_ih6IfWHMEdPRPgnitTAEcIccCCvy5NYOyUEfhBCeQsjQa-xHLT76ljtWP9WiAR8FJf9WnCIzBq6cRIiCug1Y5epKEG/s1600/014.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The sewing table's been doing extra duty lately - and is now paused for a cleaning!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What do you think? Should I make a big cardinal pillow or 3 little ones?</div>
<br />

I stalled in making them when I was struggling with sewing through thick side layers - not liking the wobbly result of the seams.<br />

So I stopped and let the problems percolate in the back of my mind until I came up with a workaround method.<br />
<br />

I loved making the <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/insomnia-works-aka-glamping-quilt.html">Dresden Table Topper</a> recently and have ideas for more.<br />
I'm itching to sew more fans.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile I've got some button selections to make for the card carriers, and a <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html">few other quilts</a> to work on.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned!!<br />

<br />
I was ready last night to start prepping the <a href="http://www.blissfullyimperfect.blogspot.com/2013/05/bakeware-and-more-thrift-share.html">giraffe needlepoint</a> to use in a pillow.<br />
<br />
Borrowing a blocking board from Mom and following her instructions, I'm now in the hurry up and wait phase. The canvas needs to dry and set in its new straightened position.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPYy33_0rTv6w7gAKP9RJdx94h6hR6Inzh54xKOdHYCK1qCkwTwOo0tYvShIJqspk8gG9YIK45WWwCYXBzml_OZj_ucSU9efmgTyqpWK02MQ9GYx6kAyHcGjV4TRnQQ_a9ee8fpZJQlpJs/s1600/blocking+needlepoint+tools.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPYy33_0rTv6w7gAKP9RJdx94h6hR6Inzh54xKOdHYCK1qCkwTwOo0tYvShIJqspk8gG9YIK45WWwCYXBzml_OZj_ucSU9efmgTyqpWK02MQ9GYx6kAyHcGjV4TRnQQ_a9ee8fpZJQlpJs/s1600/blocking+needlepoint+tools.png" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tools at the ready</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's actually my first time blocking a canvas - and here's the directions I followed:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tools required:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>steam iron</li>
<li>blocking board and pins/nails</li>
<li>damp pressing cloth (I used a tea towel)</li>
<li>cardboard for under the blocking board to protect counter from nail protrusion (even if you don't like your mauve countertops)</li>
<li>phone to call Mom - just in case ;-)</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. With needlepoint face down cover with damp pressing cloth.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Waft steam from iron over the back WITHOUT applying any pressure until canvas softens.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Starting from a corner apply nails every one inch along top - following a straight line on the blocking board.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Apply more steam if necessary and tack a nail in other two corners, pulling gently to square.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(severely twisted canvases may need more than one blocking effort)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Continue adding nails every one inch around the perimeter of the canvas, bottom then sides, using steam when needed to resoften the canvas as it cools.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Remove damp pressing cloth.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. Allow 24 hours to dry/set - repeat if necessary.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmO63iH0YGjdmwcsU88aOweBUoAZYgYJb6fs-oaKIDGhFt295Vn5zgJeIGscdoUGd7K6iEHFyILm_4XSLZKzDbiMMQt4WQUBGmHdxuvY-XgiBPznVpiWXKg3iApByTpSRkjEFwypZfJlpW/s1600/blocking+needlepoint+squared+and+drying.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmO63iH0YGjdmwcsU88aOweBUoAZYgYJb6fs-oaKIDGhFt295Vn5zgJeIGscdoUGd7K6iEHFyILm_4XSLZKzDbiMMQt4WQUBGmHdxuvY-XgiBPznVpiWXKg3iApByTpSRkjEFwypZfJlpW/s1600/blocking+needlepoint+squared+and+drying.png" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">On the back the texture of these basket weave stitches is interesting too.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
And now I wait!<br />
<br />
Will it need another squaring effort? Time will tell. Then comes the fun part - fabric shopping for the backing!!<br />

Have you had success blocking a needlepoint? What method did you use?<br />

<br />
I hope everyone enjoyed their 3 day weekend for Memorial Day (in the US). I've scheduled this post in advance so I don't know if my plans came to fruition!<br />
<br />
Previous days have turned up these household goodies in the thrift shops locally. I was particularly chuffed to find Girl Scout trefoil cookie cutters in amongst the vintage lot shown above. They were an advertising promo item from Dripolater coffee. (was that a brand of coffee or coffee maker?)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxA1JrpjaEAWGQrJu-kq8N4Ji95ce6RR9CnL8Xin4N4OIxPQkcy7yD_4_-5Peb9zSIItCaB0zw0ILqwRx6Wn5EyJ15QOx1xLSY4oPFxQpOWv7tTQRVquOI6D0rZ8Vilp6aBet4iWRiHLL/s1600/four+mugs+-+bichon+hersheypark+pop+hersheys.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxA1JrpjaEAWGQrJu-kq8N4Ji95ce6RR9CnL8Xin4N4OIxPQkcy7yD_4_-5Peb9zSIItCaB0zw0ILqwRx6Wn5EyJ15QOx1xLSY4oPFxQpOWv7tTQRVquOI6D0rZ8Vilp6aBet4iWRiHLL/s1600/four+mugs+-+bichon+hersheypark+pop+hersheys.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Cute old mugs are always popular. Here from Hersheypark in Pennsylvania, as well as a patchwork 'Pop' mug and Bichon Frise mug.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihqDGX6NxD5YainmcYSvq2CDukWehGrvvD-4tO8_12l0Db6wfdG4uTHZX5q7I33E63GJz3R9VDTwqMVvNakgJ-Gm5vitYW_p-arB8BPoQ1mSzLFE91LpxSm1O5PZJvnb051HjfNP-eHaog/s1600/print+artwork.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihqDGX6NxD5YainmcYSvq2CDukWehGrvvD-4tO8_12l0Db6wfdG4uTHZX5q7I33E63GJz3R9VDTwqMVvNakgJ-Gm5vitYW_p-arB8BPoQ1mSzLFE91LpxSm1O5PZJvnb051HjfNP-eHaog/s1600/print+artwork.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Artwork for $1 can't be beat. The cheap frames in the junk bin held these two original signed prints. The orange/rust one dated 1970 looks like student work - I may use it as a matte for the tiny handcolored print from '91. I can't read the writing - wish I knew where the street scene depicts.<br />
<br />
Anyone?<br />
<br />
Beuhler?<br />

<br />
Textile rescue time.<br />
<br />
The completed giraffe needlepoint was executed well. For $3 and a bit of labor I'll have a new cushion for the sofa! (Blocking board where are you?)<br />
<br />
Crewel work cardinals were in the same $1 bin at the thrift shoppe. An Erica Wilson rescued! The rustically framed piece may be reframed or reworked into pillows or smaller wall pieces.<br />
<br />
Anyone who's tried needlework knows how time consuming it is to complete. Reuse of these pieces is a great way to value someone else's handiwork and create a new artisan goody for yourself.<br />
<br />

<br />
So cute these birthday candle packs from 1965. Promotional items from Prudential insurance 90th anniversary!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6pHnUgCBIugf2NGbyqhGHYD4rXoS17mG5kAREiYxaN3ujlQj7rL2klgvUyMBVpqNRmNzgYShttI0kERMkNVBQqM9DaK01Mb_4CkVlcXft6MoeRYDK2zIVo7i-08kTgiMOhnZ-ni3b6hu1/s1600/advertising+level.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6pHnUgCBIugf2NGbyqhGHYD4rXoS17mG5kAREiYxaN3ujlQj7rL2klgvUyMBVpqNRmNzgYShttI0kERMkNVBQqM9DaK01Mb_4CkVlcXft6MoeRYDK2zIVo7i-08kTgiMOhnZ-ni3b6hu1/s1600/advertising+level.png" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally a decorative addition to our kitchen - the yellow ruler/level with whiskey advertising fits perfectly up there with the grandfather's lamps!<br />
<br />
What've y'all been collecting lately?<br />
<br />
