Things I learned from having hamsters

Late last year from the chaos of 15 hamsters, 6 cages, we at last dwindled down to none.

And in typical Blog style - I bring you

Top 10 9 things I learned from having hamsters

1. Even hamsters have their own personalities
2. Tiny baby hamsters just getting mobile are hilarious
3. Momma hamsters are very protective of their young (nip nip nip)
4. Teenage hamsters fight a lot. To the death. eww eww eww
(This resulted in some naming opportunities, however: 'One Eye', 'No lips' and the introduction of the 7th cage - 'hospital cage')
5. Runts are amazing
6. Pretty cages are the worst to clean
7. Baby hamsters can climb through mesh cages
8. Baby hamsters are very vocal
9. Hamsters love new bedding and fresh veggies

We're in reptile phase now....

What I'm Watching - Doc Martin

For a doctor he's inept at relating to people and this show is all about relationships! It's dryly funny, beautiful in small Cornwall village way, filled with quirky characters and moments.

The Doc vacillates between absolute befuddlement dealing with the locals to stern competence in his own medical realm.

The locals are bemused, cliquish at times, and desperate for a local doc.

Watching them work around each other is a real hoot!

I'm hooked in just 2 episodes of this UK show. Now shall I dash through all 30 available on Netflix as quick as possible? Or should I savor them slowly?

A bit of both, I think!

Take A Stitch Tuesday - Blanket Stitch

Screeching in under the wire - I played with the blanket stitch for week 2 of Take A Stitch Tuesday 2012.

Strong sun making sharp shadows here

A piece of colorful batik cotton as my base, I started following the feather imprint to get a feel for the stitch. I used the same silk floss as my sample for week 1.

But quickly I veered away from the lines before me and started overlapping and varying the size of the stitches.

Medium light - mid tones showing!

I tested out spirals - with spikes going inward, outward, and both!

Most relaxing to stitch was the wiggly line alternating 3 spikes either side in varying lengths.

Pictographs come to mind - those primitive marks carved in rocks long ago.

Plates - Thrift Share Monday

Early days, yet, in this new year. We're gently winding down from the holidays. Christmas tree is still decorated and dropping needles in the living room.

Very minimal thrifting efforts happened so far.

But a trip to Melbourne, FL and a visit to our favorite Molly Mutts II charity shop downtown did turn up some appealing crockery.

There's a Stetson pastel leaves oval platter as well as a Taylor & Smith ironstone Honey Gold chop plate.

I can't pass up anything Berggren with the Rosemaling decoration. The phrase Var Sa God apparently translates to "if you please".

Knots: useful & ornamental, George Russell Shaw

A delightful book find in the 25 cent bin recently - a reprint of the hand illustrated Knots: useful & ornamental by George Russell Shaw. From sailor's knots, to macrame and Japanese temple knots, all clearly illustrated how-to's and finished knots. I will try some of these soon - tricky to know where to start!!

And then I noticed several of the books in my browsing stack have hand-drawn illustrations.
From Living on the Earth by Alicia Bay Laurel, to an uncorrected proof copy of Amy Dacyczyn's The Tightwad Gazette III, and then for stitch reference Marion Scoular's Advice is... for listening to - not necessarily taking!!

The latter title used to refresh my memory of the difference between Blanket stitch and Buttonhole stitch. This week on Take A Stitch 2012 the Blanket stitch is the focus.

Little things have made their way home with me recently.

We're enjoying strawberries from the fields locally (Bedner's is a farm stand we try to frequent), so the Georges Briard strawberry dish was an instant grab!

And from my favorite kitchen utensil source I'm loving the aluminum butter cutter. The styling is vintage - but I've no idea if it really is. I'm tickled that it has the adjustment screw on the bottom so you can tighten the cutting wires. Not designed to use and throw away but to repair and carry on with its' duty.

Another interesting find from the same source - a pair of figural aluminum salad servers. The bottom reads Arthur Court 1991 and have the form of Lily of the Valley and rabbits. These are headed to eBay after I clean them up a little!!

I've been feeling the pull to start hand stitching some creative bits lately. And so I've joined in with Sharon B's Take a Stitch Tuesday 2012.

Each week she chooses an embroidery stitch which the participants then work in any fashion they choose. All levels of participants can join in - stitch instructions are included on the site, along with some nudges in how to use them in your own designs.

There's a flickr group here, a facebook group here, and a Stitching Fingers group here.

Week one is the Fly Stitch. I've started with some simple overlapping stitches in variegated silks. My background is some Pebeo paint sun-printed muslin leftover from other projects. I kept it simple in a small Sajou embroidery hoop, thinking perhaps I'll work all my efforts this year in this size/format.

Anyone else having a go this year?

Years end - Thrift Share Monday

I had challenged my sister-in-law to a $5 thrifted gift exchange.

She did marvelously! (It's those who know you best who can choose terrific gifties for you!)

She found me a Florida author (I love regional writers) to try, increased my gaudy tropical mug collection, spied a nifty pad of post it notes (that little black book), a few napkins to reuse, and a tea strainer. That strainer'll come in handy to try the new teas in my stocking.

(I am expanding my tea knowledge after watching this show)

Fire King Gay Fad ? hand painted casserole

I popped into a thrift shop tied to a local hospital last week. It's out of my usual driving routes so I don't get there too frequently.

They're known for their designer clothing boutique (I've not ventured in there, yet!), and for their generous discounts which enables frequent stock turnover.

The Fire King casserole dish is in great shape - I think it's the Gay Fad painted style - but I've not seen them in the clear dishes before.

It surprised me to find the still sealed crewel kit above. LeeWards is a now defunct craft store chain that I remember from my Michigan days.

Entek Loc Blocs Magic Kingdom Castle set

I'm still assembling the Magic Kingdom castle to gauge the missing pieces. Sadly the box is in shabby shape and Mickey and Minnie figures are gone. The wordless directions are in black and white - Challenging me to replicate the box version without color guides!!

And a couple of books to peruse - Far Side comics and scary stories collection are for us - the Sotheby's catalog is ebay bound, as well as the Doberman plate.

Last year about this time I was constructing 3D trees

Looks like I'm making trees again this year!

Starting with batik'ed fleece from SewBatik.com,

randomly strip-pieced together on a felt background.

Then I tested out many of the built in machine embroidery stitches with variegated rayon threads.

(The resulting back texture is interesting all by itself!)

Cut the triangle tree shapes

Added a quick trapezoid for a tree trunk and stitched around the edges.

Voila!

A forest of cheerful trees.

There.

I made stuff.

All Day Thrifting - Thrift Share Monday

Saturday was a 6 thrift shop, all day treasure hunting excursion!

Daughter along - so bright character items came home too.

Tablecloths: Yellow and purple flower mod , pulled work white linen, bright floral Japan

Several big tablecloths turned up too. The white linen pulled work cloth is gorgeous - haven't found a stain on it yet, surprisingly.

Anchor Hocking Garden Meadows oval plate, Sylvania Magic Cubes, Shiny Brite ornament box

Tucked inside that vintage Shiny Brite ornament box were these Sylvania Magic Cube flash bulbs. Remember them? Instant 70's nostalgia. The Anchor Hocking Garden Meadows plate is in lovely condition.

I recognize this teapot design but there are no marks and I'm drawing a complete blank. Help me i.d. this if you can. (My eyes are blurred from scanning 1000's of teapot images on ebay!!

We always grab the 25cent silverplate items in the silver ware tubs. There's knowledge learned researching every item!!

Fun nibbles were available at several of the thrifts celebrating their birthday's or other events.

Bag Imperfections

I was glad to finish something yesterday, having had trouble with starting, let alone completing, ANYTHING creative lately. Imperfections be danged - let me complete SOMETHING!!

It does make me painfully aware of what I can do when I focus and allow myself the time to work.

But anyway -

Two things bother me about the bag construction

1) The tucking/pinching at one of the corners - simple to remedy with more pinning during stitching to ease in excess fabrics.

2) The rumply, bumpy handle.

This morning after school dropoff (and before I head out for a run) I had a go at the strap leftovers from yesterday.

A bit of overlocking has tamed the lumpy bumpy edges.

It's a more finished appearance.

And done with relative ease.

I like that!!!

(hence the Wishful Thinking name for this tote)

These were someone else's kits - found at thrift for 50 cents each.

Inside lined with cleaned yet use-stained embroidered tablecloth segments.

And the handles cut from "tourist textiles"

those weavings often sold on the docks of cruise ports in the Caribbean.

World Quilt Show Florida - Drawn to Details

Managed to wrest a visit in to the World Quilt Show in West Palm Beach,

somewhat reluctant pre-teen in tow.

(Read that as 5.2 seconds per quilt between whiney noises.)

The lighting in the convention center was typically poor for capturing good photos of these quilts, yet some of my images are passable! My flickr slideshow here.

I was drawn to texture details yesterday.

Sally Scott's work (above) using zigzagged cording in bold color combinations - a technique I have some affinity with!

Melyn Robinson - Sabratha - United Kingdom

Melyn Robinson's method of zigzagging over yarn then applique by hand in the spaces formed, beautiful!

This muted colorway is one I relate to the UK. Not sure if it's a memory trigger from colors my relatives use in their homes, or if it's happenstance. It feels softly unusual to my technicolor Florida trained eyeballs!

Irene MacWilliam - You Can't Put Hole Where A Hole Don't Belong - United Kingdom

Color plus texture in Irene MacWilliam's quilt above. The layered swiss cheese effect with big stitch circles - effervescent!

Fumiko Tanabe - Square Dance - Japan

Fumiko Tanabe's ruffle-y F yo-yo's - some type of square yo-yo's with which I am unfamiliar. Engineer brain is mulling about the construction process every time I look at it! She attributes the F Yo-yo to Mrs. Chuck Nohara.

(Do you make a topless cube in fabric then gather in the edges???)

Joanne Reigh - Kaleidoscope of Hearts - Canada

Color was the draw on Joanne Reigh's applique entry as well as the handwork scrolling tendrils stitched on each square. (Full quilt image on my slideshow)

Greit Lombard - Block-a-Day Therapy - New Zealand

Certainly one of my favorites of the day - Greit Lombard's hand and machine stitched squares joined by herringbone stitch. I'm very impressed if these are truly one-a-day creations. How many hours sat per square???

Pre-teen survived the quilt show torture session - whines were minimized after food consumed (chicken gumbo got a thumbs up, chicken salad sandwich a bit salty)

And some retail therapy in the vendor booths when a yard of anime/manga figured fabric was discovered in amongst other Japanese fabric offerings - and she had allowance left - mood was lifted!!

Then on seeing this quilt she said she'd like to take an image in to her Civics teacher...

Shirley E Kerstetter - Presidents of the U.S. of America - United States

A 10 year labor of love - featuring a NEEDLEPOINT (and small count canvas, too) portrait of each president. The maker is 82 years old and says she has room at the top to add any more presidents she may be around for.

Astounding.

Milk Glass in that stackable form - nostalgic galore!

The bulk of spending on this display shelf unit with pierced ends and photo slots. Previous owner quickly sprayed it red - I think we'll quickly spray it robin's egg blue!!

I wonder what product it originally promoted? Soaps? Lotions? Food stuff? Scrapbooky stuff?

And a perky pair of bichon frises salt and pepper shakers - Blue Witch designs.

Just a bit of thrifting this week - more things for using than for resale. The shelf for our daughters room (all things manga/anime go on there soon) and (not pictured) a Farberware Percolator for my nostalgic coffee addiction.

Assisi Work Pincushion

Yesterday, Nick in Australia blogged about rescuing an old assisi-work pincushion at an estate sale.

Beautiful work on that pincushion - with lovely bobbly bits at the corners.

(Good story too - go have a read!!)

And doncha'-know I had an old assisi-work linen hand towel sitting in the 'probably should donate' pile. So I set to work trimming off the bottom part and stitching sides together and across the top.

Stuffed and then squinting in the quasi-light of a 15 watt CFL bulb proceeded to grumble my way through tying the bottom with little tassels and twisting a cord for the top.

Yep - keeping floss on those little bobbins "irons in" the creases.

I'll need to do some wetting and flattening to get the threads to look less like tangled 'morning hair'.

Still - not too bad for a instantaneous finish.

Yep - that's it - just ONE purchase at thrift last week. (I'm so proud of me!!)

It's a mystery kitchen gadget. I think a knife sharpener.

And what drew me to it was the red painted handle with yellow stripe.

This is the partially cleaned version - as found it was very grimy.

In place of thrifting I had efforts in organizing and planning.

Planning's a good thing. Holidays are coming, we'll have guests three times thoughout the season and the guest room is the ebay/etsy storage/packing room.

So - enough of the buying - time to list and sell sell sell!

We Martha-ed Halloween ghosts

Gauze Ghost - Martha Stewart style

Adding to our little Halloween display, daughter and I created a cheesecloth ghost a la Martha Stewart. We made some substitutions to her original instructions to keep with the "only what we have in the house" requirement. Chenille sticks instead of fancy wire in the form, 50/50 mix of white glue and water instead of starch. Worked just fine, dried over 2 days.

Wonder how big you can make these?? Life sized??

Bargain Bin - Thrift Share Monday

I've already blogged my $1 quilt save from the bargain tables outside one of our thrift shops. And there were more treasures to find on that rainy, blustery Saturday!!

(I grab a spatula, usually, as my rake to search - saves my fingers from little cuts!)

Those thermometers above are fun in their varied designs. Testing them in a cup of boiling water proves some w-i-d-e accuracy margins! (or is that precision - always got those two mixed up in science class)

Naturally these servers were in their rough form when found - dark black!

Lovely finds inside too - the peacock blue flower color of the Eva Zeisel cup/saucers is just gorgeous.

Took awhile to find the matching saucers once the cups were spied, the plates to go with were in very poor condition - so behind they stayed.

Lookee!!! I'm the lucky recipient of this quilt from my Mom. (It's a combo birthday and Xmas present) She has done a fantastic job on its construction and quilting.

A while ago I had become enamoured with a pieced quilt pattern and had a go at starting it.

But I discovered that I hated DOING the exacting piecing that it would take to make a great quilt top. So I hung the block on my wall in the living room as is, vowing to do SOMETHING with it one day because, imperfections and all, I still loved the look.

Along came a serendiptious find of Eleanor Burns Star Log Cabin book and passed it along to Mom (She likes Eleanor's method of quilt assembly). Lo and behold Mom was the one who put together the idea of expanding the colors of my block into a quilt of this books' style. Pulling off not only the star and checkerboard of the original block but adding in a favorite color combo in my home.

And it's a great result.

Now guess, how many minutes does it take for a quilt to attract a cat (and dog)?!

We do live just down the road from Yesteryear Village - well maybe a bit further than that, but not much. Fabled home The Riddle House located at the Village has been explored by the Ghost Adventures reality show (eh - they're a bit too over-dramatic for my taste).

Doesn't stop us from venturing out in the dark with our "Ghost Meter" to pick up EMF activity in the cul-de-sac. (Envision daughter and her friend tip toe-ing around in the dark - pointing device in every direction)

ooooo - blinking lights - calls to Mom - what could it be?

Well - anything with electricity - this time it was the underground cable lines!!

What I'm Watching Wednesday...Bill Cunnningham New York

Another Netflix recommendation from last night - and this one is a delight!

Bill Cunningham New York

A documentary of the fashion chronicler/photographer from the New York Times.

He's in his 80's, rides his Schwinn bike throughout the city snapping the fashions on folks he sees - both celebrity and non. It's the fashion he cares about - the clothes and how they're worn.

He's a fascinating personality. Keeps a very simple lifestyle, minimal, his whole joyful life effort seems put into capturing images of the clothes as they're worn on the street as well as on the runway, then assembling the snapped images for his newspaper columns.

His day swings from street photography in the light to covering parties in the evenings. Seasonally he heads to Paris to cover the runway shows. He calls it "retraining the eye" twice a year.

This film captivated me - I'm not familiar with The New York Times or his columns - and I was taken with his focus on his image making and his seeming pleasantness. Then captivated again with his extremely minimal lifestyle - it seems he has a cot, a chair and massive stacks of file cabinets! So fascinating.

A couple of weeks ago our weekend outing included Bear and Bird gallery inside Tate's Comics.

Lookie what came home with us...these XYZ blocks...with their make-me-laugh graphics. T is for Trailer, O is for outhouse, B is for bald...beats A for apple, B for ball anyday!!

Oh - we're long past the innocent kiddie toy days, time for a bit o'fun!!

Vintage Kitchen - Thrift Share Monday

Kitchen goodies turned up this week while shopping the thrifts.

I hadn't seen a food chopper quite like this one - its lid is quite space saucer in shape, and the wooden bead top has aged to a beautiful soft red. What do you reckon - circa 1960's? 50's? 70's? The glass vessel beneath is marked Dispensers Inc, Los Angeles, New York.

Those stacking bowls/canisters set on the right has a great assembled shape too. I keep thinking "I Love Lucy" with Ricky Ricardo and his bongo drums. Funnily, I didn't realize they stacked when I bought them nested inside the top bowl. I figured 2 of the lids were missing!! Researching made me wiser, however. There is a label on them, but I'm not sure it's original to the set. It says "National Silver Company Nagoya Japan". These certainly aren't silver - they're plastic. So - more research!!

Meanwhile, I am enjoying their bright cheerfulness sitting on my countertop.

Little bits of (faux) Autumn

A touch of cool in the weather this morning - barely 70 degrees - it feels wonderful.

Mentally, it's autumn - the daylight hours are shorter, shadows are longer. Tropical heat is still here - the air conditioner runs around the clock.

Shop displays woo us to pretend we live "up north" with displays of pumpkins and fallen leaves, sweaters and long sleeved shirts. Teasing the senses - mulled apple cider is presented with its spicy aroma - samples given freely.

So, likewise, I'm faking autumn at home, tucking faux fallen leaves about. Bringing in the autumn colors as we head into our daughters favorite holiday - Halloween!

Flowers and Furry critters

The sun and I are off sync this last week. Good photos have been hard to create, so I've setup the dining room photo station

My backgrounds of late have been colorful artist papers from Michael's - branching out from basic blue or white.

It's been a busy thrifting time - found some lovely stuff and keeping 25% of what I find - waffling over 25% of it and listing the rest! This weekend was the Big Garage Sale again at the South Florida Fairgrounds. Busy, crowded and fun. All indoors in air conditioning thankfully!

Books, books, books, of course, and some Pendelfin figurines from England. Lots of floral bits - including those Vera Neumann for Mikasa plates in the photo above. Pattern named "Field Flowers" I have 4 big and 6 little plates. They're in my waffling pile - I like them. I can see me using them.

The local Faith Farm thrift store was having a 60th anniversary sale - 60% and more off their low low prices - I think I spent $1.25 for two big bags of goodies. We stayed to have lunch and sit on the veranda listening to a steel drum player - lovely atmosphere!

Before I get into the good thrifty stuff,

here's a highlight from my weekend...

Tate's comics in Lauderhill, FL has an indie gallery upstairs Bear and Bird. Current feature is Stitch Wars Strikes Back - the second Star Wars in stitch related show.

An enjoyable array of items and techniques with particularly excellent needle felted finger puppets of Ewoks and other furry characters.

Now I'm looking forward to the next exhibit "Creep Cinema" and then later on the RockTheStitch bazaar in the same time frame.

(And that indie gallery is going to be dangerous to my pocketbook!!

Yet I must admit first to some Imperfect mindsets this morning - it's been one of those bring me to my knees with struggle type of days so far - one where hard, hard "NO's" had to be enforced with family and friends - the type of morning where pushing back against people you love is necessary.

I sort of remember stenography - my Mom was learning it for awhile and I'd pick up her workbooks and try it out. Those ledger papers are great for mixed media artwork.

Possibly my favorite of the week - Restaurantware from Homer Laughlin - one lonely bowl. Think counter diners, robust china, coffee refills. This bowl makes me want oatmeal or a side of fruit salad!!

Full of crazed charm - and certainly imperfect - this Johnson Bros Enfield platter has such delicate little flowers along the edges.

Starting slowly with gentle lines of stitch down the sandwich of batiks.

Surprising myself when a rectangular pillow turns into a roll pillow

and then again into a tote.

The front panel a simple tuck pocket.

And tomorrow when I stitch again - what will it then become?

Don't you love how each thrift shop has it's own personality? Not only in how the items are presented, but a pricing personality too.

When you find a multitude of fun things under 50 cents at one shop, they'll be $1-$2 and up at another thrift.

It's Labor Day in the US. Traditionally a barbecue with family and friends occasion. We're keeping it low key with an at home day.

I had to laugh at Late Night Coffee's reseller's post today - item #10 - take a break. It's easy for 24/7 addiction to this business! I'm guilty of that some days - to the suffering of my creative pursuits. (Dang car payment - that was the catalyst for my focus on the selling side of thrift!!)

Still - it's all enjoyable - despite the need for some uhhhhh ...boundaries... to the efforts!!

Mystery Items - Thrift Share Monday (on Thursday!)

Hurricane Irene stayed away from us and allowed our North Carolina visitor to make the trek down. Oodles of thrift shopping occurred over a 4 day period. From tidy, organized Goodwill's to cluttered family run thrifts and even an ultra-hoarder, stacked to the ceiling, turn sideways down the aisles, where's my flashlight hole in the wall type of place.

Want to help with some mystery item identification????

No. 1:

Marked 'Italy', accordion silver-plated tongs. Are they sugar tongs? Grape tongs? They're fairly robust, yet petite in size.

No. 2:

The mind boggles at the length of this cruise - 40 days!! What was this dish? A wine coaster? Ash tray? Pin dish? Souvenir??? It's Rosenthal china, too.

No. 3:

Sure, they're Georges Briard glasses. Pattern name is a mystery. What type of glasses though? With vegetable, fruit and fish drawings on them - juice glasses? Mixed drinks glasses. A minor puzzle!!!

Bonus game: which item cost the most at 85 cents???

What I'm Watching Wednesday - Running motivators

Running the Sahara

Three professional runners (Charlie Engle (USA), Ray Zahab (Canada), and Kevin Lin (Taiwan)) take on an ultimate challenge to cross Africa's Sahara desert on foot. Running. About a two marathon distance per day. (52.4 miles)

That's not something done without a support crew! It's an expedition requiring doctors and planners besides the runners. Yep - it's a travel/road trip movie in essence. Not only about the logistics of the effort but the mental and emotional ups and downs each of the runners endured.

And an interesting cross-country view of Africa and the folks there. One image sticks in my mind - a little boy, perhaps 7 years old, parked alone by his nomadic family in a desolate stretch - and left for days as they go hunting for water.

From the runner's blog, Day 46:

Yesterday, while breaking trail a few miles ahead of the runners, Mohamed and I met a 7-year-old boy who'd been left in the desert by himself to tend his family's herd of sheep, goats, and camels. His parents had been gone for two days, traveling south to collect water from the nearest well.

The boy was scared and hungry. It was heartbreaking. Mohamed and I sat with him in the afternoon's hot sun for awhile. He had camel milk to drink and a few bits of dried meat to eat, but those appeared to be his only forms of sustenance. We gave him a box of cookies, a few 1.5 liter bottles of water, and a plastic bag filled with fresh dates. We asked if his parents would be back soon. He said yes, in a few days. We asked if this happened often; he said yes, whenever they needed water.

I kept thinking the boy was the same age as a my own kids when they were second or third-graders, and yet—due to the demands of human survival in this, place, the world's largest desert—he'd been left alone with the responsibility of looking after his family's entire material wealth while his parents chased down enough water to ensure their next stretch of short-term future.

What struck me most was how hard it must be for people in this part of the world to get ahead in their personal affairs, when so much of their daily life is concentrated on merely surviving. It certainly re-prioritizes things. Donovan Webster

In this suburban fear-driven area - where we've been saturated with media events covering all the child abandonment cases, neglect cases, what-if-the-bad-guys-are-coming-to-get-you mentality - this was an harrowing sight.

A charity effort is linked to the expedition - H2O Africa.

Spirit of the Marathon

A lighter movie by far! Covering tales of runners from the elite level to mid-pack and back of pack-ers. And a great motivator for me - my 1/2 marathon official training started yesterday. Just what I needed to get my mind back on track for the January effort.

This film is focused on individuals - their training efforts throughout the year and results and experience during the race.The website includes updates on the runners in subsequent years and their running careers. Interesting to watch the drive of the elite runners during training and setbacks, likewise with the casual runners and the juggling of home life and training.

I like creative work that includes the time element. Items worked day by day or week by week in small fragments, then brought together into a complete piece.
This is different from saying "I'll make a quilt of a specific block every week then assemble it into a quilt". That puts too much pre-planning on the design.
Instead, I like that each effort is a reaction, recollection or recording of that specific day or week. A captured, repeated, reflective moment.

My own efforts in this manner...

Waiting room knitting

I had spent frequent hours in doctors waiting rooms - never for myself - but as driver, caregiver, worrier. Along came my knitting - simple scarf knitting - in black and white. I have 2.5 scarves from those days. And many memories of conversations started with other waiting room worriers.

Summer - August 2006 - Traces

A quiet month at home - very hot, rising gas prices, new neighborhood. Didn't go out much.
I recorded every trip I drove that month.
Stitched on a layer of Peltex covered in segments of Mapquest printouts

The underside I call the "earthworm view".

I'm ready to set out on another "stitch record" project. Something with a lighter tone, perhaps, than waiting room worrying, or gas price/new home/summer fatigue fretting. The conceptual knitting project records the skies of the day in knit. Beautiful. Reflective of the location.

I contemplate something in fabric. Strips perhaps. Or painted on fabric.

We'll see.....

What I'm Watching Wednesday - All In This Tea

Netflix suggested for me All In This Tea recently (gee - another travel documentary).

This is Les Blank's film following his friend David Lee Hoffman, a renowned tea expert (no, I did not know that before this film). Hoffman traveled to China on his tea buying journeys looking for organically raised leaves, handmade teas, and battled bureaucracy and language barriers.

Now, I'm English and I grew up drinking tea - stuff from the grocery shelves, typically in bags, tho' sometimes loose leaf, and nearly always with a dollop of milk and a touch of sugar.

This film makes me want to try a million different teas. To try to taste, as Hoffman does, the soil and land it was grown in; to taste the care the farmer took with the cultivation.

(Instead of merely a warm cup of liquid to dunk a biscuit in!!)

I'm not knocking the tea that I do drink -something I'm not apt to take any great effort in choosing - (it's typically PGTips, rather than Lipton or Tetley or Red Rose). But maybe I'm missing something - some depth of flavor experience. I wonder if my palate can detect any subtleties in the teas - is that something that can be "trained in" or is it a genetic happenstance of the taste buds to be sensitive to flavors. I've dabbled in herbal teas - and a green tea or two - nothing really sticks out in my mind as a memorable experience. So, where to start??!

(Oh! For the textile lover in me - that appliqued tent he used at the Himalayan Fair - fantastic!!)

On Our way to School Supplies...Thrift Share Monday

School supplies bargain weeks, lately.

We try to pickup a years worth of art goodies, bouncing between all the "loss leader" offerings at the local haunts.

It's been a manga summer - (our daughter's drawing above) - she's been immersed in animation, cartoon and comic classes at the Coral Springs Art Museum summer camps. Sketches everywhere - and improvements too - getting a handle on shading.

(I've always loved the expressions she makes so easily)

((Yup - I may have a bit of jealousy there))

Have we been thrifting? Natch!!

Found loads of books - and bought - even tho' I'd sworn off them for awhile.

(No, you didn't seriously think I'd photo all those titles? Nope, too boring too see!)

That gaudy neon angel coin bank tho' - I'd photograph that!!

This is getting seasonal in color offerings - Laurel Burch Ganz star dish - originally was a set of two - only one made it to the sale shelf. Makes me wonder if it was two evenly sized dishes or a big and a little.

Octoberfest Mickey Mouse! Or at least Mickey Mouse sporting German togs from DisneyWorld's Epcot theme park. (Very cute lederhosen with hidden Mickey details on the shorts and chest strap)

On a slow Sunday afternoon the cashier at the local Goodwill nods at you as she chats to a customer saying " Yeah, it's our regulars that keep us going on days like this"
Finding the door locked (early) to another thrift shop and start to walk away - only to have the owner scramble to open it and flag you down saying "Of course YOU can come in, feel free to browse".

Last evening spent at the Obon festival at Morikami Museum and Park. The Japanese festival of light that remembers ancestors as they float lanterns across the lake at dusk.

(We stood on a hill overlooking the lake with the wind from a storm blowing the lanterns into a huddle on the shore. Lightning all around - we stayed as long as we dared - then dashed for the parking field ahead of the pelting rain.)

What I'm watching Wednesday - Bela Fleck - Throw Down Your Heart

Streaming Netflix movies to the TV or laptop is one of my favorite evening pastimes.

I'm plowing through every genre - yet I return often to documentaries and indie movies.

Netflix suggests some true gems based on my ratings of movies already viewed.

Most recently was this film about Bela Fleck. He's a renowned banjo player (no, I did not know about him until I saw the film),who made a journey to four African countries. He wished to connect and perform with folk musicians in the birthplace of the early banjo, then to ultimately record an album from this work.

I love a travel documentary. There's the 'fish out of water' disconnect of the traveler from his culture and homeland, and in this case the human reconnect through exploration of the vocals, rhythms, instrumentation of each region.

The music is wonderful. To me - soothing, not harsh - and at times so joyful.

I'll watch 'Throw Down Your Heart' a few more times - perhaps just leave it running in the background as I work through the day!!

(As someone who loves working with fabrics, dyes and textile markings - I was also enamoured of the beautiful batiks and mudcloth fabrics seen in the dress of the people.)

More Organization - Thrift Share Monday

I am not a born organized person. I tend to fumble around in Chaos until the right organization system puts me to rights - and then I can stick with it and stay that way!!

This was my recent Aha! moment. Go vertical. Yep - been said by many and for me it sunk in with controlling the countertop office clutter.

This Pier One basket organizer sat in the garage in my Goodwill donate pile for several years - until it fell over. I glanced at it on the way to putting out some garbage and instantly saw how it could solve my ebay/etsy/amazon tools-in-chaos woes. By seeing them sorted in a vertical manner - rather than hidden in a pile or falling to the bottom of a box I get access to them easily and so simple to return them to a tidy spot. Lookee - it holds my receipt files, shipping files, camera cords, measuring tape, postal scale, postage charts, notepads, pens and (most importantly) my glasses all in reach of the computer. Yay me!!

Another week of Taxi Mom duties (last one this summer). Thrifting finds turned towards the kid stuff. A Care Bears figural mug from 1984 - Friend bear.

A modern set of Matryoshka Russian nesting dolls with hand painted horses. (Don't quiz me on the types of horses depicted - I havent' a clue)

Vintage Nancy Drew books - awwww - such sweet cover illustrations.

And a couple of plush toys - Blue from Blue's Clues and Sally from Cars.

Did you find any goodies last week? I totally missed the Kids Consignment sale in West Palm Beach over the weekend. Instead I found myself recovering from a collapsed closet rod (hello Lowe's - hello 3 bags of purged clothing!!)

Even Tuesday - Color Layering

Tuesdays - a set aside time where I make an effort to work on creative things. Odd Tuesday's typically with friends of the artistic type, Even Tuesday's for my own delight.

Inspired by the latest Quilting Arts magazine (Aug/Sept 2011) with a focus on surface design. This is my version of the disperse dye process that Marie-Therese Wisniowski detailed in her article "New Landscapes".

I'm all about the thrifty when trying new things. At a garage sale I had picked up a teacher's pack of Crayola fabric crayons (a dozen packages) so I have ample to play with. (Holly Brackmann's Disperse Dye workshop I took a few summers ago - she alerted us to the other disperse dye products beyond the ones to mixup from scratch). And since these products work on synthetic fabrics - out came a hunk of polyester sheers from the storage closet.

The process is simple - color with the crayons on paper - iron the paper on to your fabric. That's it.
The fun part comes in the layering. Transparent colors mix in interesting ways when placed on top of each other. Marie-Therese suggests working from light to dark in layers, and using plant materials as resists. I substituted paper cutouts.

The other surprise is how the rather dull crayon colors iron into vibrant brights on the fabric. It's with the layering that subtleties of color can be achieved.

So much more to play with!!

Hickory Dickory - Thrift Share Monday

NO! I did not buy this. This blurry cel phone pic is a Hey-we-had-that moment that I had to share with my Mum. Thrift stores are fun like that! (Those blue cabinets behind did come home with us - I'll share how we used them later...)

And I did buy this casserole with the Jamaica-something pattern. (LOVE the handle shape) I've been all about the orange this weekend. And, why - yes! That is my daughter's top from Old Navy that I'm using as a backdrop. (hee hee)

A little harder to photograph - these etched glass Nestle mugs with the world motif - I found three of them, and they're quite heavy.

Know what these are???

OOOoooo a set of linen pulled work shams from Ethan Allen.

They were hanging right next to this vintage Snoopy/Peanuts curtain set. That's what I love about the thrifts - high end to low end shopping all in one place!!

And in my excitement - a Thrift Oops. This lovely bulbous drip edge jug has a cracked handle.
