Gees Bend quilt |
March in Fort Lauderdale is traditionally time for a quilt show at the War Memorial auditorium.
The show alternates years between that hosted by the four local guilds and the one hosted by Once Upon a Quilt shop. This was OUAQ's turn hosting its Quilt Show by the Sea 2012.
Special exhibits included a selection by the Gees Bend Quilt Collective. I'd not seen any of these quilts "live" so that was a treat!
Melanie Kane Brewer's complex art quilts were displayed too. None of my photos did them justice - take a peek at her website instead!
Karyn Dengler/Lisa Wilson - Moon Dance |
After the overwhelming size of the World Quilt show I saw in November (flickr slideshow here), this small local show was an enjoyable, intimate treat. Yes, I've created a slideshow for it too, you can find it here.
Mary W Anderson - Passages |
An interesting mix of innovative and traditional quilts. Plus a few surprises.
All quilts entered into the judged display were labelled, it was hit or miss for labels in the special exhibits.
Natalie Carlton - Dancers |
Natalie Carlton had numerous entries and was bopping around the floor answering questions about her techniques and processes.
Natalie Carlton - Dandelion |
Natalie Carlton - Famous Faces |
Her Famous Faces quilt drew a crowd, (peruse the slideshow to see Natalie showing the reverse side and her portrait done in the same style)
Sally Bolen/Karen Marchetti - Martha's Garden |
All in all an inspiring and NOT overwhelming jaunt down to Fort Lauderdale!!
I love Gee's Bend quilts. Have seen some in our neck of the woods too.
