Impromptu Birthday Thrifting

Hefty glass vase and sweet little plate

I had some packages to mail yesterday - my sales from the weekend ready to go!

Popping into a thrift shop was not on my to-do list - intending instead a relaxing day sorting out my sewing/craft room.

But my lovely family brought me a big bunch of flowers that were beyond any vase capacity in house.

So I HAD to go to Goodwill next door to the post office to get a bigger vase, didn't I?

Ceramic textured lamp

I don't usually look at the housegoods too much anymore. I'm decluttering my  home first, but something kept drawing me into this lamp.

Its texture reminded me of sand dollars - and it was quite big - a scale proper for my bedside.
Heavy too.

But the clincher was the price...
$8.98!!!

Ceramic textured vase

I tested it at the store - it's a 3-way switch, and it works just fine.
I'm curious - how old is it? There's no makers mark and the plug is older in style, say 60's or 70's perhaps.

Now to research lampshades and how to get the color/texture/scale just right!!

Attack of the glassware - Thrift Share Monday

Georges Briard ~ Blendo ~ Disney Cheshire Cat
Panda milk glass ~ Hazel Atlas Bar Shaker ~ Japan rooster weathervane
Pyrex Butterprint and Daisy ~ Panda reverse side ~ Souvenir florida small spoons

On our way to walk the beach
(and since we were in the vicinity)
Daughter and I stopped at the multi-charity thrift shop plaza.

SHOCK!!
One of our go-to messy shops had undergone a makeover.
IT WAS TIDY.
All the lighting was repaired so you could easily see the condition of what you were buying.
Uh-oh.
That usually means higher prices!
And it did.

We walked out only with these:

Vintage Florida Small Spoon souvenir set

The thrift shop next door had had a makeover too,
same deal - higher prices.
(Even with their convoluted discount schemes, you know,
Buy 1 Get 2, spin the wheel for extra discount, 50% off this rack only, All shoes over $50 now $7.99, etc)
We walked out only with these:

Japan rooster weathervane china mugs

It was a few days later,
after the beach walk,
that we moseyed around a thrift shop closer to home.
Finding the remainder of the glassware in the collage above.

My favorite find these:

Georges Briard black & white rocks glasses

I'm calling them Moon Phase glasses,
turning up nothing similar in my search on Georges Briard patterns!

Have you noticed any summer straightening going on in your local thrift shopping forays?

Is it a seasonal thing?
(Or as daughter and I wondered - did the fire marshall come in and have a heart attack at the clutter?)

Four little things - Thrift Share Monday

Berggren tile, Libbey wheat pitcher, brass reindeer

Four little things found their way home with us last week.
(but we spied many more)

Kicking myself over the Libbey wheat print pitcher - I left a couple of the matching glasses on the shelf at the Goodwill recently - Doh! (as Homer Simpson would say)

And where do you sit on the polish/don't polish of metalware?
This little reindeer was ultra-tarnished - I like shiny so I polished it.
But, there's a whole hoot of folks that love the patina'd look.
Should I have left it alone?
(I could leave it for a year or so to retarnish after all!!)

Fire King Georges Briard silver Persian Garden print casserole

This, however, was a definite "polish me" candidate.
That silver was BLACK and unappealing for foodware.
It cleaned up easily and prettily - so lace-like in person.
And is in wonderful condition!
(So often those patterns are scratched and abraded with use)

Did you make it out and about to thrifts last week?
What did you find?

Thrift catchup - Thrift Share Monday

Plaid!
 Wool blankets and Aladdin thermos

How's your summer going?
(Or winter - if you're in the other hemisphere.)

We've settled into a sloth-like pace here.
(And I mean that in a good way!)

Easing through the days with just enough activity to fight off boredom,
yet not enough to induce stress.

Big Golden book and Disney mugs

Tiny bits of thrifting going on.
Far less than our daily Goodwill stroll after school pickup.

Oooo - thrifty trivia time!
What is the connection between the Big Golden Book 'Little Verses' and the  Walt Disney World mugs?

Hint: It has to do with Mary Blair
(answer below!)

From the 30's to the 50's
Heinz and Betty Crocker cookbooks
Hazel Atlas tumblers
Cookie Cutters

Don't be deceived by those cookbooks into thinking I'm Martha Stewart in disguise!

I like them because they're little domestic time capsules.
The illustrations and photos depict fantasy home life of the times.

And the pictures also help me identify usage of vintage housewares!
(and now I know the original Heinz 57 products - they're listed inside that 1939 cookbook)

Tin photo frame

Sometimes a purchase is just for us.
This tin photo frame with attractive wood support came from Zanna Jane's,  a new consignment shop 3 doors down from our Goodwill.

Swan plaid boxed handkerchiefs

Are you ready for the trivia question answer?

Artist Mary Blair was a Disney color stylist whose work was used in numerous of the Disney theme park rides and resorts, most notably It's A Small World and tile work in the Contemporary Resort.
She was also the artist on this Big Golden Book!

(Did you guess the connection?)

Big Garage Sale - Thrift Share Monday

South Florida Fairgrounds Expo Center

There are two variants of the Garage Sale/Flea Markets held at our county Expo Center.

Long shadows = arrived early!

The smaller events have 130 booths and fill half of the air-conditioned venue.

INFLATION! Entry went up by $1 and DD is no longer free.

The larger events are double the size and include huge charity booths as well as the paid vendor spaces. (Parking is still free!!!)

130+ booths - this is a half-sized event

I've usually done best at the large events with the charity booths. But times - they are a-changing!

[50's wooden Mammy Pappy salt pepper shakers + Ekco beater]

Considering I did all my looking and buying within an hour of entering, vendors were very ready to make big discounts on their wares. I was a little stunned.

[Schumann plates, Carnival Georges Briard, Orange syrup dispenser]

I saw two of the orange topped dispensers in  different booths. I passed up this one the first time I saw it. Glad it was still there when I buzzed by again - it was better condition, larger than the other and 1/2 the price.

[Abstract Cat]

Great modern shape to this matte glazed cat - now, if I can just get the price in Sharpie off the bottom!!

[Ritzenhoff Beer Glass with Davor Markovic art]

Apparently, there's a yearly series of these beer glasses issued by Ritzenhoff (a German name).
I liked the colorful abstract art of a fella' oogling the women either side of him.

[Fire King milk glass egg nog bowl with mugs]

This vendor had a load of vintage goodies. I'd barely lifted a cup to look and he made me an unbelievable offer - DONE - I said, and wrapped up they were.

[what was I thinking spoons]

Aaaaaakkkkk - the devil of the 25 cent bin! In the dim light they looked intriguing, but getting them home I'm not quite sure what they are - anyone know? I'm guessing some sort of demitasse coffee spoon.

It was a good day to shop the garage sale - inside out of the heat (and I know so many are having the 100+ temperatures lately, you can relate!!) and fun finds to boot.

Did you head out and find any goodies?
